Kỳ Anh Tunnels Tour 1 Day: A Journey to the “Sand Fortress” – Starting from Hoi An

To be honest, every time I write about the war, I feel heavy. It’s a difficult, complex topic. But strangely, every time I go to the Kỳ Anh Tunnels —one of the largest tunnel systems in Vietnam, located in Tam Kỳ, Da Nang — I feel like I’m opening a very special door. It’s a place where the peace of the village and the memories of bombs and bullets lie superimposed, separated only by a thin layer of earth.

Kỳ Anh Tunnels Tour from Hoi An: A Journey to the “Sand Fortress” – Starting (1-Day Tour, Deep Historical & Cultural Experience)

The drive from Hoi An to Tam Kỳ takes about an hour. Maybe it’s because I know that beneath our feet lies an entire “world” that once saved a whole community. And every time the guests into the tunnels, watching them stoop down, watching them touch the rough, earthen walls, I feel history become clearer than ever.

Why the Kỳ Anh Tunnels Tour is the Optimal Choice from Hoi An

Many guests ask me: “Why don’t you take us to Củ Chi or Vịnh Mốc? Aren’t they more famous?”

The Kỳ Anh Tunnels, stretching approximately 32km with 3 complex underground layers, are among the largest in the country. But what’s special about them is… they don’t show off. They retain the complete rustic and authentic feel of a “sand fortress” dug by the people themselves.

  • Prime Location: Very close to Hoi An and Tam Kỳ, perfect for a 1-Day Kỳ Anh Tunnels Tour from Hoi An.
  • Authentic Experience: No concrete reinforcement, no colored lights, no dramatization. There are only small tunnels where you must turn sideways to fit, and secret doors hidden under village wells, bamboo roots, and house floors.
  • Real-Life” Stories: You will hear stories never found in textbooks, vividly recounted by local guides—people who lived through that era.

Vivid Highlights within the Tunnel System

The Village Well – The Secret Alarm Post

If I had to choose one moment that I’ll always remember, it would be standing in front of the well. It looks ordinary on the outside, but underneath, it was the alarm station for the entire hamlet. If there were strange footsteps, a slight tremor, or any collision above ground, those in the tunnels would know immediately. Just thinking about it is chilling.

From the well, we crawl through the tunnel segment connecting to the first-aid station beneath the Thạch Tân communal house. It’s only eighty centimeters wide and about a meter and a half high. The exit even lies beneath the floor of Mr. Kỳ’s house, and another segment leads up under a haystack. The people of Quảng Nam utilize everything.

The 500-Year-Old Rỏi Mật Tree – A Historical Witness

A few minutes’ walk leads to the Rỏi Mật Tree, more than half a millennium old. This tree has been recognized as a Heritage Tree, but to the villagers, it is a witness to countless confrontations.

American and ARVN soldiers used it as an artillery observation point. Guerrillas also relied on it for sentry duty. The tree stood between the two sides, belonging to neither. It lived stoically, resilient, just like the people of Quảng Nam.

Command Bunker & Vietnamese Heroic Mother Statue

In the command bunker area, the meeting table still bears traces of dust. On the wall is inscribed Uncle Ho’s saying: “Nothing is more precious than independence and freedom.” Every time I lead guests here, I say nothing more. It’s not needed. Everyone naturally falls silent.

Finishing the tunnels, the group usually visits the Vietnamese Heroic Mother Statue (dedicated to Mother Nguyễn Thị Thứ, who had 11 children and grandchildren sacrifice their lives). Standing in the wide square, looking up at her face, you suddenly feel overwhelmed. This is an immense and deeply emotional architectural sculpture not to be missed.
