Ta Con Airbase – Khe Sanh Relic Site | Quang Tri DMZ Tour
Ta Con Airbase – Khe Sanh: A Place That Made Me Stop and Reflect. How many people and when would you like to go? Travelled to Quang Tri, I honestly didn’t expect Ta Con Airbase (Ta Con Airport – Khe Sanh Relic Site) to affect me this much. I thought it would just be another historical stop on a Quang Tri tour. But once I stepped inside, something felt different — quiet, heavy, meaningful.

Getting to Ta Con Airbase – A Long, Quiet Road Through the Mountains
I rode a motorbike from Dong Ha. The wind in the mountains was colder than I expected, and the closer I got to Lao Bao, the quieter everything became. Small houses, distant hills, and long curves along Highway 9 — the whole drive felt strangely peaceful.
Ta Con Airbase sits in Tan Hop commune, Huong Hoa district. In the past, the U.S. military built this place into a huge strategic base. A runway nearly 2–3 km long, reinforced fortifications, aircraft, tanks — everything. Now only the metal skeletons remain, rusting quietly in the sun.

A Battlefield Once Surrounded for 170 Days
Inside the small museum, I saw old photos, maps, and documents. Black-and-white portraits of young Vietnamese soldiers — skinny, determined, eyes full of courage. There were also photos of destroyed aircraft and collapsed bunkers. I couldn’t look at them for too long.
Standing in the centre of the old runway, I tried imagining the 170 days and nights of the Khe Sanh campaign. It’s chilling to think how intense it must have been. On July 9, 1968, the victory flag was raised at Ta Con Airbase. I stood right around that area, and despite the warm sun, I felt goosebumps.

Today, Ta Con Airbase Is Peaceful — Almost Too Peaceful
It’s strange how a place once filled with explosions is now covered in green grass and wind. Visitors walk around quietly; some take photos, others just sit and think. I was definitely the second type. There’s something about this place that makes you slow down.

Best Time to Visit
March to August is ideal. Avoid heavy rainy days if you can — Quang Tri weather can be unpredictable. Entrance fee: about 40,000 VND. Open from 08:00 to 17:00. Please avoid climbing onto the aircraft or tanks. It’s unsafe and damages the relics.
Why Ta Con Airbase Stays in My Memory
I’m not a big history enthusiast, but some places speak to you without trying. Ta Con Airbase is one of those places — not glamorous, not flashy, but deeply real. If you’re planning a Quang Tri tour or Quang Tri DMZ Tour, please don’t skip it. It only takes a short visit, but the feeling stays with you much longer
