Hue Dinner Cruise on the Dragon Boat: An Unexpectedly Romantic Experience!
The unexpected “date night” on the Huong River. Hue dinner cruise on the dragon boat – Why Was It So Romantic?! (Better Than I Expected!) To be honest with you, the first time I heard about the Hue Dinner Cruise on the Dragon Boat tour, I thought it was just… too touristy. You know, the kind of mass-market activity everyone does when they visit Hue. But, oh my god, I was wrong. Terribly wrong.

That night, I decided to give it a try. The all-inclusive ticket cost me around 600,000 VND/person (this price is a great deal, considering everything included, though prices vary by menu). The moment I stepped down at the Toa Kham wharf, the feeling was instantly different. It wasn’t the hustle and bustle of a walking street; it was strangely serene and gentle.

Hue Dinner Cruise
Preparation & Pier: Tips for Booking Your Hue Dinner on a Boat & Boarding the Ancient Dragon Boat
The Dinner on the Huong River experience generally comes in two main packages, which you need to differentiate when booking:
- Ca Hue Music Performance (Group Tour): Approximately 90,000 – 150,000 VND/person (about 1 hour, does not include dinner).
- Dinner & Ca Hue Music (Group Tour): Prices range from 470,000 – 650,000 VND/person (about 2 hours, includes dinner, Ca Hue, and flower lantern release).
I chose the full package for the most complete experience.
- Departure Wharf: Toa Kham Wharf (49 Le Loi, Phu Nhuan Ward, Hue City).
- Peak Time Slots:
- 6:00 PM – 7:00 PM: Boarding, seating, taking photos in Hue royal court costumes, and enjoying dinner.
- 7:00 PM – 8:00 PM: The Ca Hue on the Dragon Boat performance and flower lantern release.
Insider Tip: Board the boat as early as possible to secure a seat at the bow or near a window. The boat usually sets sail around 6:30 PM, so don’t miss the moment the city lights up! The Dragon Boat itself, while perhaps a bit old, has a solemn and traditional charm that defines the spirit of Hue.

Hue Royal Cuisine: Dinner on the Huong River Was More Than Just a Meal
Regarding the food, don’t expect a lavish, overwhelming royal banquet. It is a set Hue-style formal dinner: delicate, fulfilling, and surprisingly delicious. This is the authentic experience of Hue dinner on a boat you seek.
I absolutely loved the dish, Fig Salad mixed with shrimp and pork with rice crackers (Vả trộn). The crispness of the crackers, the creamy texture of the fig, shrimp, and pork—it was divine. Following that were traditional Hue Rice Cakes (Bánh Bèo, Bánh Nậm, Bánh Lọc). While not the famous Beef Noodle Soup, this is the refined Imperial cuisine you need to taste to appreciate the sophistication of Hue culture.
Having dinner on the Huong River, with the cool breeze and the sight of the illuminated Truong Tien Bridge, was an incredibly relaxing and romantic experience.
Sample Menu Highlights
- Appetisers: Fig Salad (must-try!), Pineapple Spring Rolls.
- Main Course: Assorted Hue Rice Cakes, Prawns with Passion Fruit Sauce, Stewed Chicken/Pork…
- Dessert: Sweet and delicate Hue Che (Vietnamese Sweet Soup).

Ca Hue on the Dragon Boat: The Soulful, Haunting Melodies of the Perfume River
I must admit, I took this tour primarily to listen to the Ca Hue (traditional court music) on the Huong River. And it was worth every single penny.
Around 7:45 PM, after everyone had finished dinner and settled in, the lights on the boat softened, and the sounds of the Kìm lute and Tranh zither began. The female singers (artisans) emerged. Their voices, oh my goodness, they were not commercial pop singers. Their performance was a soulful confession, the melancholy of the mountains and rivers, the elegance of the Imperial Court.
These melodies of Hue gradually seeped into my heart. Everyone fell silent. You realise that the true soul of Hue isn’t in its grand tombs but in this sweet yet poignant singing. The program is facilitated by a bilingual (English-Vietnamese) MC, ensuring international guests fully understand the stories behind the music.

Releasing Flower Lanterns: A Romantic Finale to the Hue Dinner Cruise on the Dragon Boat
The final part, and the one I loved the most, was releasing flower lanterns to pray for peace.
Each person receives a small lantern, lights the candle, and gently sets it afloat on the river. The scene of hundreds of twinkling lights drifting on the Huong River at night truly felt magical. I made all sorts of wishes: for myself, for my family, and maybe even a quick wish for this article.
The boat returned to Toa Kham wharf around 8:45 PM. The trip lasted barely two hours, but the memories and emotions were overflowing.
